Stephen F. Austin

History Celebration focusing on Stephen F. Austin, Mexican Texas and the ultimate march to independence.

San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site

A very special history event hosted at the site to commemorate the stories of Stephen F. Austin and his settlers, the event will offer themed programming related to historical events that occurred around Austin’s birthday in the years 1821-1836.

The event will include hands-on programming for children and families, living history demonstrations including surveying and printing activities, guest authors/lecturers, thematic tours of the grounds and the museum and much more. That Saturday will also mark the conclusion to Texas Archeology Month as the site finishes up some active excavation work near the museum. This is a free event (donations accepted).

As the headquarters of Stephen F. Austin’s Colony in Mexican Texas, the historic town of San Felipe de Austin played a pivotal role in the arrival of American settlers and the ultimate story of independence. Serving as a political, economic and social crossroads in early Texas, San Felipe de Austin and its residents have deep connections to the events that took place at all of the prominent Texas Revolution sites including the Alamo.

A wide array of stories and activities will help attendees celebrate this chapter of Texas history in style. Local stakeholders have commemorated Austin’s birthday at the site since the 1920s.

The event is hosted by the Friends of the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site as well as area supporters including Walmart and the Mark A. Chapman Foundation.

The site and museum are open every day from 9 am to 5 pm

Come celebrate with us with fun and informative activities for all ages.

Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade
Saturday, December 7
, 2019
(First Saturday of the Month)

The lights – just look at the lights!
The Fantasy Park looks like a fairyland lighted by beams of millions of tiny stars with one giant star hovering over it all. The angels are heralding the birth of the Christ Child. Look – are those the three Wise men coming afar? So many others are here also. There's Santa, Frosty the Snowman, the Sugarplum Fairy, a toy train, Christmas trees, toy soldiers, and the nativity scene. Then, out of the darkness at the end of main Street, march hundreds of children singing, bands playing, and floats covered with lights, slowly making their way down to Fantasy Park.

The parade begins promptly at 6 pm and continues to about 7:30 pm. Activities all day preceding the lighting of the park.

The public is invited to the Attwater’s Prairie Chicken (APC) Festival for a chance to see the critically endangered birds during the booming season – a time the males gather to perform their elaborate courtship ritual.

.

Prairie Chicken

Attwater Prairie Chicken Festival 2020

.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) staff and volunteers will be conducting guided tours to the “booming” grounds, which provide the best chance to see the typically elusive birds.

Participants will tour areas that are normally closed to the public and will hear first-hand how the FWS and its partners are working to recover the APC, including refuge management efforts and coastal prairie ecosystem issues. The tours are about two hours in length.

All the walking and driving tours will begin at the refuge’s visitor center.

Those interested in learning more about the festival should contact the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge at (979) 234-3021, ext. 221 or 223.

The APC is an endangered grouse that is unique to Texas gulf coastal areas. Over a century ago, there were around one million APCs living on six million acres of the Texas and Louisiana gulf coastal prairie. Today, less than one percent of their original habitat remains and their numbers are extremely low. The festival brings much needed attention to a bird that, though critically endangered, continues to remain on the landscape thanks to strong partnerships and sound science.
