With the help of German immigrants like the Peiper Family who had already located in Austin’ Colony during the 1820s and 1830s, German immigrants began settling at New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, Sisterdale, and other locations, in the 1840s, imparting a distinctive character to these communities.
“Lone Star and Eagle” features reproductions of archival photographs, newspaper headlines, maps and paintings that tell the story of these remarkable people known for their individual and communal industry in setting down roots and adapting ways of the old country to life in a new world. Austin County, especially Cat Spring, is included in the exhibit. |

The Sealy Chamber of Commerce Presents:
The Carson & Barnes
Circus Funtastic
Tuesday, March 16, 2021
Circus Funtastic will perform in Austin County!
Come and join us on Tuesday, March 16 for the return of Carson & Barnes Circus to Austin County with “Circus Funtastic” for two performances.
The first at 4:30 pm and the second at 7:00 pm.
The “Circus Funtastic” performances will take place at the
Austin County Fair Convention & Expo Center
located 1076 Hwy 159 E, Bellville.
Why at the Expo center you ask?
Because of COVID restriction, the circus is unable to utilize the Big Top tent nor bring their animals for the performance.
The Sealy Chamber wanted to continue the tradition of a family friendly event for all of Austin County so the Expo it is! It is the only event center large enough to host the two performances and we greatly appreciate the board and staff of the Austin County Fair Association working with the Sealy Chamber and “Circus Funtastic” to bring this fun filled event to Austin County.
This year, “Circus Funtastic” will bring us their amazing and extraordinary artists from around the world to thrill us with their death-defying feats and exquisite artistry.
Tickets cost will be: under 2 - no charge; 2–11 - $5.00;
and Adults 12 & up - $10.00 in advance from the Chamber,
$12.00 on the Carson & Barnes website, and $15.00 at the door.
Visit SealyChamber.com
or the Sealy Chamber of Commerce Facebook page
for up to date information on the “Circus Funtastic” or to purchase tickets.
We hope to see you there! |

During the frenetic last months of the Texas Revolution, when the situation seemed most perilous, anxieties among Texians reached a fever pitch and heated rhetoric proliferated. The pressure mounted for Texas men to act “manly”, which necessitated they meet the enemy on the battlefield (and not desert or retreat from the fight). The turmoil of the Runaway Scrape affected gender expectations for women as well. In some instances, women grappled for power and decision-making roles with men in their refugee groups; in other cases, women ceded leadership decisions to their male counterparts. Fear of defeat prompted larger questions of what it meant to be a man and woman in a period of war and retreat. Men could rise to the challenge and fulfill their manly obligations on the battlefield or fail to do so. For women, the Runaway Scrape sometimes opened new opportunities for leadership and decision making, although that was not always the case. How stable were new configurations of gender roles and expectations? As it turns out, they were almost as fleeting as the rebellion itself. |

Attwater's Prairie Chicken Festival
March TBA, 2021
Sponsor: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Tours, lectures, activities for all ages.
Special Tours Sat. every hour from 7am to 4pm and Sun. from 7am to 4pm
Tours Offered to Celebrate Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Festival
The public is invited to the
Attwater’s Prairie Chicken (APC) Festival
for a chance to see the critically endangered birds during the booming season – a time
the males gather to perform their elaborate courtship ritual.
Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) staff and volunteers will be conducting guided tours to the “booming” grounds, which provide the best chance to see the typically elusive birds.
Participants will tour areas that are normally closed to the public and will hear first-hand how the FWS and its partners are working to recover the APC, including refuge management efforts and coastal prairie ecosystem issues. The tours are about two hours in length.
All the walking and driving tours will begin at the refuge’s visitor center.
Those interested in learning more about the festival should contact the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge at (979) 234-3021, ext. 221 or 223.
The APC is an endangered grouse that is unique to Texas gulf coastal areas. Over a century ago, there were around one million APCs living on six million acres of the Texas and Louisiana gulf coastal prairie. Today, less than one percent of their original habitat remains and their numbers are extremely low. The festival brings much needed attention to a bird that, though critically endangered, continues to remain on the landscape thanks to strong partnerships and sound science. |

The lights – just look at the lights!
The Fantasy Park looks like a fairyland lighted by beams of millions of tiny stars with one giant star hovering over it all. The angels are heralding the birth of the Christ Child. Look – are those the three Wise men coming afar? So many others are here also. There's Santa, Frosty the Snowman, the Sugarplum Fairy, a toy train, Christmas trees, toy soldiers, and the nativity scene. Then, out of the darkness at the end of main Street, march hundreds of children singing, bands playing, and floats covered with lights, slowly making their way down to Fantasy Park.

Christmas in Old Town Sealy
Sunday, December TBA, 2021
The Sealy Area Historical Society is sponsoring a “drive around” Christmas homes tour in Sealy’s historic neighborhood extending from West St. to Hwy 36 and from Columbus Rd. (FM 1094) to 8th St. on Sunday, December 13 from 5:30–8:30 PM.
Christmas in Old Town Sealy will end with the joyous sounds of live Christmas carols at the gazebo in the Levine Park from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. We are safer outdoors, but we will practice social distancing! Participating residents will decorate the exteriors of their homes, appear on their porches dressed in period attire consistent with the early 1900s, and/or play Christmas music from their front porches. Volunteers will line the sidewalks to the homes with luminarias. This is a free event open to the public. SealyHistoricalSociety.org |
